Holiday Home Safety

The holidays are in full swing, but before your family and friends roll into town, be sure to check if your home isholiday ready - when it comes to fire and electrical safety? The National Fire Protection Association claims that electrical issues are responsible for one in three Christmas fires. You can prevent fires in your home by following these easy recommendations before the weekend.

Lights

• Check your lights. In fact, look over each string for signs of damage including a frayed cord, defective or rusted sockets, detached connections or exposed wires. If your bulbs need to be replaced, be sure to use the same voltage in order to reduce any risk of the bulbs overheating, melting or sparking and causing a fire. If possible, be sure to use light strands that are UL listed.
  
  
• Limit the number of connected strands. Be sure not to attach more than three strings together at one time or the chances of fire will increase.

Christmas Trees

• Location. One cause of Christmas tree fires is when a tree is located too close to a heat source such as a heat vent, fireplace, wood stove, furnace or candle(s). Make sure your tree is at least three feet from any heat source. In addition, make sure your tree is not blocking an exit in your home.
  
  
• Water daily. Be sure to water your tree daily, and take it down once it begins to dry out.

Fireplace

• Know your chimney health. If you are not certain of the safety of your chimney, it is better not to burn a fire. A nice alternative is to light candles inside the fireplace or cover logs with a safe strand of lights (see recommendations above) for a festive effect. 

• Open the flue. Before starting a fire, be sure that you have opened the flue to the chimney. 

• Remove potential fire hazards. Also before starting a fire, make sure to remove any greenery from the mantle or from around the fireplace. 

• Use a screen.  A screen will eliminate flying embers which could potentially start a fire or cause injury to a loved one or pet. 

• Throw away wrapping paper.  Reduce the urge to throw wrapping paper into the fire as it can cause an unexpected flash fire. It is better to dispose of the wrapping paper in a proper trash bag or can. 

By paying attention to these few extra details right now, you will ensure nothing steals the magic of the season for you and your loved ones.

What to do until SERVPRO arrives!!!

If you have a water damage from a clean source such as water supply lines, sink overflows, tub overflows, or appliance malfunctions, here are some things to do before SERVPRO arrives.

• Shut off the source of the water.

• Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if the access panel is safe from electrical shock.

• Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting

• Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items

• Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying

• Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting

• Remove to a safe, dry place any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture.

• Use wooden clothespins to keep furniture skirting off damp floors

• Hang draperies with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet carpeting or floors

Be aware of Carbon Monoxide

You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels, it can kill a person in minutes. Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels, like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, etc. burn incompletely.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, hundreds of people die accidentally every year from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning as a result of improperly used or malfunctioning fuel burning appliances. Even more die from CO produced by idling cars.

The EPA says prevention is the key to avoiding carbon monoxide poisoning. Protect yourself with these tips:

• Have fuel-burning appliances, like oil and gas furnaces, gas or kerosene heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves, inspected by a trained professional at the beginning of every heating season.
• Install audible CO detectors; in homes, place them outside of each sleeping area.
• Never use a charcoal grill, hibachi or generator in an enclosed area, like a garage. Even if the door is open, the CO may not be properly ventilated.
• Do not idle a car inside a garage.
• Before using a fireplace, make sure the flue is open of proper ventilation.

Fast Thinking and Simple Actions Can Protect Valuables in Your Home
Floods are occurring more often in the USA than they have before. These floods arise from not only melting snows in the spring but also from heavy downpours of rainfall, even in winter. In some locations, flash floods have cost numerous people their lives, in addition to creating general havoc, loss of business income, inventory, and jobs, as well as homes and businesses themselves have been lost.

Hopefully, Rock hill residents will never see extensive flood damage like what has recently been endured across the USA, but it's always better to know who to call when flooding ever does happen. A fast response to flooding can decrease the amount of flood damage and reduce losses, as well as the costs of repairing and restoring flood-damaged structures and other items.

If you know heavy rainfall will be headed your way, move your most valuable items to an upper floor, if possible. If there is no upper level available, place those items that can be damaged the most easily, but are lightweight, up on top of taller dressers or even inside of cabinets that are near the ceiling. Other items, such as TV sets, might be able to be placed on lower dressers. All food that is not refrigerated or frozen should be moved to a higher location. Food cans and jars cannot be cleaned well enough to obtain proper food safety levels after being exposed to flood water.

After flood waters have receded, you need to call a company that is experienced in all stages of restoring flood damaged properties. What To Do in Extreme Heat

Hot summer days.

It has been a hot summer in York County

This weekend, temperatures are expected to reach the 3-digit mark! SERVPRO wants you and your family to be safe and take the proper precautions during this time of extreme heat. When temperatures reaching this high, the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature.

Extreme Heat can cause the following:

Heat Exhaustion - Typically occurs when people exercise heavily or work in a hot, humid place where body fluids are lost through heavy sweating. Blood flow to the skin increases, causing blood flow to decrease to the vital organs. This results in a form of mild shock. If not treated, the victim's condition will worsen. Body temperature will keep rising and the victim may suffer heat stroke.

Heat Stroke - A life-threatening condition. The victim's temperature control system, which produces sweating to cool the body, stops working. The body temperature can rise so high that brain damage and death may result if the body is not cooled quickly.

To prepare for extreme heat, you should:

• To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
• Install window air conditioners snugly; insulate if necessary.
• Check air-conditioning ducts for proper insulation.
• Install temporary window reflectors (for use between windows and drapes), such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard, to reflect heat back outside.
• Weather-strip doors and sills to keep cool air in.
• Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings, or louvers. (Outdoor awnings or louvers can reduce the heat that enters a home by up to 80 percent.)
• Keep storm windows up all year.
• Listen to local weather forecasts and stay aware of upcoming temperature changes.
• Know those in your neighborhood who are elderly, young, sick or overweight. They are more likely to become victims of excessive heat and may need help.
• Be aware that people living in urban areas may be at greater risk from the effects of a prolonged heat wave than are people living in rural areas.
• Get trained in first aid to learn how to treat heat-related emergencies.

What you should do if the weather is extremely hot:

• Listen to NOAA Weather Radio for critical updates from the National Weather Service (NWS).
• Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
• Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
• Stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine if air conditioning is not available.
• Postpone outdoor games and activities.
• Consider spending the warmest part of the day in public buildings such as libraries, schools, movie theaters, shopping malls, and other community facilities. Circulating air can cool the body by increasing the perspiration rate of evaporation.
• Eat well-balanced, light, and regular meals. Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.
• Drink plenty of water; even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine. Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease; are on fluid-restricted diets; or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake.
• Limit intake of alcoholic beverages.
• Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
• Protect face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
• Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day. Use a buddy system when working in extreme heat, and take frequent breaks.
• Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.
• Avoid extreme temperature changes.

A little about us! 

We know that there are many different restoration companies than you can choose in York County and the surrounding areas. We would LOVE to be your go-to company in the event of water, fire, or mold damage. 

We wanted to tell you a little bit about our company and where we made our start. 

Ted and Doris Isaacson launched SERVPRO in 1967 as a painting business in Sacramento, California. With a background in cleaning and restoration, however, Ted and Doris soon transformed the company into a franchisor of cleanup and restoration specialists.

SERVPRO relocated the corporate headquarters from Sacramento to Gallatin, TN, in 1988 in a strategic move to place itself within 600 miles of 50% of the U.S. population.

Disaster strikes.  You've got major damage to your home in York County.  Fortunately, you have good insurance.  But the way you work with your insurance company and its claim adjuster can make a big difference in whether you get your claim approved and receive appropriate reimbursement for the damage.  Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute.

Start by contacting your homeowner's insurance representative.  Ask your insurance rep:

1. Whether the damage is covered under the terms of your policy.
2. How long you have to file your claim.
3. Whether your claim exceeds your insurance deductible (the amount of loss you agree to pay before insurance kicks in)
4. How long it will take to process the insurance claim
5. Whether you'll need estimates for repairs

Your insurance agent or representative is not the person who will come to your home to inspect the damage.  Damage assessment is done by an insurance claim adjuster.  Your rep will put you in touch with a claim adjuster from the insurance company.  You'll need to prepare for the adjuster's visit.

Preparing for the Adjuster's Visit

Your insurance company may send you a proof of loss form to complete or the claim adjuster may visit your home first.  (An adjuster is a person professionally trained to assess damage.)  In either case, the more information you have about your damaged possessions - a description of the item, approximate date of purchase and what it would cost to replace or repair - the faster your claim generally can be settled by the insurance company.

To substantiate your loss, prepare an inventory of damaged or destroyed items.  Give a copy to the insurance adjuster along with copies of any receipts.  Don't throw out damaged items until the adjuster visits you.  You should also consider photographing or videotaping the damage.  If your property was destroyed or you no longer have any records, work from memory.

Identify structural damage to your home and other structures such as your garage, tool shed, patio, or in-ground swimming pool.  Make a list of everything you want to show the adjuster, for example, cracks in the walls and missing roof tiles.  You should also get your electrical system checked.  Most insurance companies pay for these inspections.

Get written bids from licensed contractors.  The bids should include details of the materials to be used and prices on a line-by-line basis.  This makes adjusting the claim faster and simpler.

Keep copies of the lists and other documents you submit to your insurance company.  Also keep copies of whatever paperwork your insurance company gave you and record the names and phone numbers of everyone you speak to.

Flood Damage Often Excluded

Flood damage is excluded under standard homeowners and renters insurance policies.  Flood coverage, however, is available as a separate policy from the federal government's National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and from a few private insurers.  The NFIP provides coverage up to $250,000 for the structure of the home and $100,000 for personal possessions.  Flood insurance claims should be filed with your homeowners insurance company.

According to AccuWeather Storm Warning Meteorologist Alex Avalos, the storms will bring the risk of damaging 70-mph wind gusts, hail, frequent lighting strikes and torrential rainfall.
