Holiday Safety During the Holidays

12/16/2022 (Permalink)

House decorated for the Holidays. Holiday Home Safety

The holidays are in full swing, but before your family and friends roll into town, be sure to check if your home isholiday ready - when it comes to fire and electrical safety? The National Fire Protection Association claims that electrical issues are responsible for one in three Christmas fires. You can prevent fires in your home by following these easy recommendations before the weekend.

Lights

    • Check your lights. In fact, look over each string for signs of damage including a frayed cord, defective or rusted sockets, detached connections or exposed wires. If your bulbs need to be replaced, be sure to use the same voltage in order to reduce any risk of the bulbs overheating, melting or sparking and causing a fire. If possible, be sure to use light strands that are UL listed.

    • Limit the number of connected strands. Be sure not to attach more than three strings together at one time or the chances of fire will increase.

Christmas Trees

  • Location. One cause of Christmas tree fires is when a tree is located too close to a heat source such as a heat vent, fireplace, wood stove, furnace or candle(s). Make sure your tree is at least three feet from any heat source. In addition, make sure your tree is not blocking an exit in your home.

  • Water daily. Be sure to water your tree daily, and take it down once it begins to dry out.

Fireplace

  • Know your chimney health. If you are not certain of the safety of your chimney, it is better not to burn a fire. A nice alternative is to light candles inside the fireplace or cover logs with a safe strand of lights (see recommendations above) for a festive effect.
  • Open the flue. Before starting a fire, be sure that you have opened the flue to the chimney.
  • Remove potential fire hazards. Also before starting a fire, make sure to remove any greenery from the mantle or from around the fireplace.
  • Use a screen.  A screen will eliminate flying embers which could potentially start a fire or cause injury to a loved one or pet.
  • Throw away wrapping paper.  Reduce the urge to throw wrapping paper into the fire as it can cause an unexpected flash fire. It is better to dispose of the wrapping paper in a proper trash bag or can.

By paying attention to these few extra details right now, you will ensure nothing steals the magic of the season for you and your loved ones.

Our wishes you and your family a safe and happy holiday season. Remember that in the event of an emergency, call us 24/7.

What To Look For When Choosing A Restoration Company

Rock Hill South Carolina fire and water damage restoration company.

What To Look For When Choosing A Restoration Company

When a homeowner’s house in Rock Hill,SC becomes damaged as a result of a flood, storm or fire, choosing a company to assist in the restoration process can be difficult. There are several factors to consider that can help homeowners find a company that’s Faster to Any Size Disaster.

1. Experience

After a disaster, damage to a home can be extensive and multifaceted. For example, water damage can also result in mold growth, and fires can make an area more prone to flooding. Though some companies specialize in certain types of disaster responses, it’s generally wise to choose a company that knows how to handle a myriad of issues. An experienced restoration company can also assist homeowners with their insurance claim and can answer questions.

2. A Quick Response

After a home becomes damaged, it’s often important for the restoration process to begin as quickly as possible. The longer it takes for restoration to begin, the more likely it is that the amount of damage will increase, meaning the cost and time it will take to complete restoration can drastically increase. A restoration company that is locally owned will respond Faster to Any Size Disaster, whereas a company that is not local will be more likely to have a slower response.

3. Access to the Right Tools and Equipment

When it comes to restoring a home, it’s often important that a restoration company can quickly access the tools and equipment necessary. When specialized equipment is needed to restore a home, waiting to equipment to arrive can bring the process to a grinding halt. However, a local business that is part of a franchise will have access to a myriad of helpful equipment and can also get the equipment to damaged homes in a timely manner.

Experience, response time and access to the best tools and equipment are important factors to consider when choosing a restoration company. Ultimately, a restoration company that is Faster to Any Size Disaster can improve the process for everyone involved.

Carbon Monoxide - A Silent Killer

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

Be aware of Carbon Monoxide

You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels, it can kill a person in minutes. Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels, like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, etc. burn incompletely.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, hundreds of people die accidentally every year from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning as a result of improperly used or malfunctioning fuel burning appliances. Even more die from CO produced by idling cars.

The EPA says prevention is the key to avoiding carbon monoxide poisoning. Protect yourself with these tips:

  • Have fuel-burning appliances, like oil and gas furnaces, gas or kerosene heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves, inspected by a trained professional at the beginning of every heating season.
  • Install audible CO detectors; in homes, place them outside of each sleeping area.
  • Never use a charcoal grill, hibachi or generator in an enclosed area, like a garage. Even if the door is open, the CO may not be properly ventilated.
  • Do not idle a car inside a garage.
  • Before using a fireplace, make sure the flue is open of proper ventilation.

Flood Damage can be Costly: Here are a Few Tips on How to Decrease Your Losses in Rock Hill

9/27/2016 (Permalink)

We are ready to help.

Fast Thinking and Simple Actions Can Protect Valuables in Your Home
Floods are occurring more often in the USA than they have before. These floods arise from not only melting snows in the spring but also from heavy downpours of rainfall, even in winter. In some locations, flash floods have cost numerous people their lives, in addition to creating general havoc, loss of business income, inventory, and jobs, as well as homes and businesses themselves have been lost.

Hopefully, Rock hill residents will never see extensive flood damage like what has recently been endured across the USA, but it's always better to know who to call when flooding ever does happen. A fast response to flooding can decrease the amount of flood damage and reduce losses, as well as the costs of repairing and restoring flood-damaged structures and other items.

If you know heavy rainfall will be headed your way, move your most valuable items to an upper floor, if possible. If there is no upper level available, place those items that can be damaged the most easily, but are lightweight, up on top of taller dressers or even inside of cabinets that are near the ceiling. Other items, such as TV sets, might be able to be placed on lower dressers. All food that is not refrigerated or frozen should be moved to a higher location. Food cans and jars cannot be cleaned well enough to obtain proper food safety levels after being exposed to flood water.

After flood waters have receded, you need to call a company that is experienced in all stages of restoring flood damaged properties. SERVPRO has a local office in Fort Mill, Rock Hill area but has access to resources at a national level. We are trained according to IICRC standards and are certified in all stages of restoring flood-damaged homes and businesses.

We start with water extraction, and then begin to sanitize and clean while others begin the drying process. Furniture restoration can keep your replacement costs low, and not only includes cleaning of the exterior upholstery but also the interior padding and foam that is often found in upholstered chairs, couches, and other items. Drapes and other textiles can be cleaned at our site, and carpets will be cleaned and sanitized, then inspected to ensure they do not need to be replaced instead. Carpets, because of their location and purpose, are often hit the worst in a flood. While we do our best to preserve it, many carpets do need to be replaced in order to protect residents and others who will spend time in carpeted rooms. Area rugs can be cleaned at our location, however.

Part of the problem with flood water is that it can contain the worst in contamination. Not only does flood water often contain chemical waste from roads and streets, but it can also contain industrial run-off that was drained into area rivers. Sewage run-off should be another concern. At SERVPRO, we've had extensive training in actually dealing with this kind of flood water and can eliminate much of the risk these contaminants can pose to you and your family.

Sanitizing your home or business can continue through the drying process. Drying must be complete so that secondary water damage does not become a reality. This can include rotting of internal wood beams, mold growth, and warped and splintering wood features in your home. Preventing secondary damage is another way to save on costs – prevention is always less time-consuming and also less costly than dealing with subsequent secondary damage at a later date.

What To Do in Extreme Heat

8/2/2016 (Permalink)

Hot summer days.

It has been a hot summer in York County

This weekend, temperatures are expected to reach the 3-digit mark! SERVPRO wants you and your family to be safe and take the proper precautions during this time of extreme heat. When temperatures reaching this high, the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature.

Extreme Heat can cause the following:

Heat Exhaustion - Typically occurs when people exercise heavily or work in a hot, humid place where body fluids are lost through heavy sweating. Blood flow to the skin increases, causing blood flow to decrease to the vital organs. This results in a form of mild shock. If not treated, the victim's condition will worsen. Body temperature will keep rising and the victim may suffer heat stroke.

Heat Stroke - A life-threatening condition. The victim's temperature control system, which produces sweating to cool the body, stops working. The body temperature can rise so high that brain damage and death may result if the body is not cooled quickly.

To prepare for extreme heat, you should:

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
  • Install window air conditioners snugly; insulate if necessary.
  • Check air-conditioning ducts for proper insulation.
  • Install temporary window reflectors (for use between windows and drapes), such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard, to reflect heat back outside.
  • Weather-strip doors and sills to keep cool air in.
  • Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings, or louvers. (Outdoor awnings or louvers can reduce the heat that enters a home by up to 80 percent.)
  • Keep storm windows up all year.
  • Listen to local weather forecasts and stay aware of upcoming temperature changes.
  • Know those in your neighborhood who are elderly, young, sick or overweight. They are more likely to become victims of excessive heat and may need help.
  • Be aware that people living in urban areas may be at greater risk from the effects of a prolonged heat wave than are people living in rural areas.
  • Get trained in first aid to learn how to treat heat-related emergencies.

What you should do if the weather is extremely hot:

  • Listen to NOAA Weather Radio for critical updates from the National Weather Service (NWS).
  • Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
  • Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
  • Stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine if air conditioning is not available.
  • Postpone outdoor games and activities.
  • Consider spending the warmest part of the day in public buildings such as libraries, schools, movie theaters, shopping malls, and other community facilities. Circulating air can cool the body by increasing the perspiration rate of evaporation.
  • Eat well-balanced, light, and regular meals. Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.
  • Drink plenty of water; even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine. Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease; are on fluid-restricted diets; or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake.
  • Limit intake of alcoholic beverages.
  • Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
  • Protect face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day. Use a buddy system when working in extreme heat, and take frequent breaks.
  • Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Go to a designated public shelter if your home loses power during periods of extreme heat. Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area (example: shelter 12345).

With temperatures this hot, give your body a break and take a swim!

Disaster Preparation in Rock Hill

7/21/2016 (Permalink)

Be ready for any size disaster in Rock Hill.

Disaster Cleanup And Preparation In Rock Hill

Most people do not prepare for disasters because they do not think about what can go wrong until the disasters actually occur. Unfortunately, when disasters hit, they affect everyone in the community which make it harder for the police, medical, professional first-responders to help everyone at once. This is why it is paramount to know the different kind of disasters that can strike in the area one resides at so that they know how to prepare for them before hand. Disaster preparation and having an emergency plan make handling the situations much easier and will be much lighter on the wallet. This article will talk about many of the disasters that occur in the Rock Hill area and ways to prevent and/or handle them.
Disaster preparation first requires knowing the most common disaster types in the area. Because of the location of Rock Hill, it does face the same threat of natural disasters like many other places (floods, hurricanes, etc). Rather, the biggest emergency threats include fire and water damage. Due to the longevity and intensity of heat in the summer, water comes much harder despite being less frequent as other places. Understandably, this excess can cause damage.

Emergency preparedness is not as difficult as you may think it would be for these disasters. The very first part to your emergency plan should be to get some kind of insurance. The key to insurance is making sure that what you are insuring is relevant. While tornado damage insurance may not be the most sound investment, fire damage may be, especially in the more dry areas. The second part to emergency preparedness is to make sure that if something were to occur, the people involved and the area (house, business building, etc) is safe. If the house were to burn down, is there another safe place to seek refuge? Is there enough food? Will the food last (non-perishable)? Just considerations such as that. If it were the other type of damage, is the house still habitable (mold, bacteria, etc)?

The best way to prepare for heat damage is:
  • Create a family escape plan.
  • Limit use of electronics/outlets/cooking stoves/anything that can overheat .
  • Switch of these items when not in use.
  • Be watchful of flammable objects and where they are located (do not put near stove).
  • Install smoke detectors and make sure they are working.
  • Get carbon monoxide alarms! These are silent killers.
  • Try to get an extinguisher.
Although they may seem obvious, these are the most common things people forget that work the best.

For water damage, take these into consideration:
  • Turn off when not using to reduce any kind of flow or pipe problems.
  • Clean gutters and pipes routinely.
  • Do not use electrical objects (TVs, microwaves, heating tools) in an area affected by damage even if it is the ceiling.
  • Do not enter rooms of damage of electricity is on.
  • Do not use items affected or that were in damaged area.
This too may seem trivial but it helps. The main thing about this kind of damage is not the damage itself but how it affects the area and being mindful of the deadly combination of electricity.

Getting Insurance Company Help After a Disaster

3/22/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO is here to help with any type of disaster to your home or business.

Disaster strikes.  You've got major damage to your home in York County.  Fortunately, you have good insurance.  But the way you work with your insurance company and its claim adjuster can make a big difference in whether you get your claim approved and receive appropriate reimbursement for the damage.  Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute.

Start by contacting your homeowner's insurance representative.  Ask your insurance rep:

  1. Whether the damage is covered under the terms of your policy.
  2. How long you have to file your claim.
  3. Whether your claim exceeds your insurance deductible (the amount of loss you agree to pay before insurance kicks in)
  4. How long it will take to process the insurance claim
  5. Whether you'll need estimates for repairs

Your insurance agent or representative is not the person who will come to your home to inspect the damage.  Damage assessment is done by an insurance claim adjuster.  Your rep will put you in touch with a claim adjuster from the insurance company.  You'll need to prepare for the adjuster's visit.

Preparing for the Adjuster's Visit

Your insurance company may send you a proof of loss form to complete or the claim adjuster may visit your home first.  (An adjuster is a person professionally trained to assess damage.)  In either case, the more information you have about your damaged possessions - a description of the item, approximate date of purchase and what it would cost to replace or repair - the faster your claim generally can be settled by the insurance company.

To substantiate your loss, prepare an inventory of damaged or destroyed items.  Give a copy to the insurance adjuster along with copies of any receipts.  Don't throw out damaged items until the adjuster visits you.  You should also consider photographing or videotaping the damage.  If your property was destroyed or you no longer have any records, work from memory.

Identify structural damage to your home and other structures such as your garage, tool shed, patio, or in-ground swimming pool.  Make a list of everything you want to show the adjuster, for example, cracks in the walls and missing roof tiles.  You should also get your electrical system checked.  Most insurance companies pay for these inspections.

Get written bids from licensed contractors.  The bids should include details of the materials to be used and prices on a line-by-line basis.  This makes adjusting the claim faster and simpler.

Keep copies of the lists and other documents you submit to your insurance company.  Also keep copies of whatever paperwork your insurance company gave you and record the names and phone numbers of everyone you speak to.

Flood Damage Often Excluded

Flood damage is excluded under standard homeowners and renters insurance policies.  Flood coverage, however, is available as a separate policy from the federal government's National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and from a few private insurers.  The NFIP provides coverage up to $250,000 for the structure of the home and $100,000 for personal possessions.  Flood insurance claims should be filed with your homeowners insurance company.

Steps to prevent the worst on water damage in Clover

1/13/2016 (Permalink)

Call a top water damage restoration company like SERVPRO to help you today.

Water damage creates a nightmare for homeowners. It is caused when water accumulates in an area where it shouldn’t. Whether it is a leaking pipe, broken plumbing system or a malfunctioning household appliance, water damage can quickly create havoc. It can damage thousands of dollars worth wood furniture, electronics, upholstery, and plumbing appliances. While it starts with a leak in a pipe, the actual damage occurs when the leak remains for an extended time. For this reason, you need to act quickly and take preventive steps to reduce the damage and restore the situation. Here are few important steps to prevent the worse on water damage.

First of all, you need to identify the source of water leakage. Check out the pipes and the entire plumbing system to identify the leakage. Once the source of leakage is identified, you can prevent it from getting worse. Turn off all interior water sources. Every member of the house should know where the main valve is located and how to operate it. In times of water damage, this main valve and the angle stops need to turned off.

Secondly, check if any electrical components are affected by water. Keep yourselves away from electrical switches until a professional checks them. It is very dangerous to use any electrical equipment during water damage. Don’t use a vacuum cleaner to remove excess water- instead, manually mop the floor as much as possible.

Last but not least, move all the equipment to a dry place. However it is not recommended to handle items that are damaged by a sewer backup. Remove excess water by pinching holes into the bubbled ceiling.

How to Best Protect Your Fort Mill or Rock Hill Commercial Building from Water Damage

7/2/2015 (Permalink)

The only way to make sure there is a speedy response is to be prepared ahead of time.

How to Best Protect Your Commercial Building from Water Damage

Every day, thousands of buildings experience Fort Mill or Rock Hill water damage. In some cases, the damage is from storms. In others, it is from run of the mill leaks. In still others, it is from fire being extinguished -- in fact, counter-intuitively, most fires result in more water damage than fire damage. Water is the most common type of damage that Fort Mill and Rock Hill buildings experience. When it is not dealt with promptly and effectively, the problem can rapidly grow from a minor issue to something costing thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.

Here are a few suggestions for how to best protect your business from water damage and minimize the fall-out when something does happen:

Prepare An Emergency Plan

Given how integral water is to all life and to most industries, it is practically guaranteed that a Fort Mill or Rock Hill commercial building will have to deal with water damage at some point. Thus, one of the best things a business owner can do is prepare for that inevitability ahead of time in order to keep losses to a minimum. Because water damage can grow exponentially if not addressed immediately, time is of the essence. The only way to make sure there is a speedy response is to be prepared ahead of time.

Your emergency plan should include:

  • A map of the building showing where the shut off points are for water, electricity and gas plus a set of instructions on how to shut them down fast.
  • A conveniently located toolbox.
  • A list of emergency phone numbers, such as the fire department, plumbers, SERVPRO, emergency personnel, and police.

Once you have an emergency plan in place, you should focus on prevention. Inspecting vulnerable areas is a best practice.

Inspect Your Roof Regularly

  • Check all rooftop penetrations, both interior and exterior.
  • Look for water stains.
  • Check all flashing, drains and seals.

Inspect Your Walls Regularly

  • Check wall joints around doors and windows.
  • Check flashing and sealant integrity.

Inspect Your Windows Regularly

  • Check for air seal integrity.
  • Test all locks and other mechanical parts.
  • Check flashing and joints.
  • Look for water stains or mold growth on window sills and interior walls.

Emergency plans and inspections are both prevention measures. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Simple Steps for Preventing Water Damage in Your Fort Mill or Rock Hill House

7/2/2015 (Permalink)

The first step is to examine the appliances in your home for leaks.

Simple Steps for Preventing Water Damage in Your House

Fort Mill or Rock Hill water damage can slowly destroy a building. A problem many homeowners face is that there are multiple points throughout the house where water leaks can occur. This can make detecting and stopping Fort Mill or Rock Hill water damage difficult. You should know about some simple steps to help prevent water damage in your home.

Examine Appliances for Leaks

The first step is to examine the appliances in your home for leaks. Appliances that use water such as washing machines and dishwashers can potentially cause a large amount of damage over time. You want to look at the hoses and connections that attach the appliances to the water supply. Feel the hoses and look for leaks, corrosion or other damage. Replace any damaged or leaking hoses immediately. You also want to check the ground under and around appliances in case there is other damage inside allowing water to escape.

Thoroughly Inspect Your Plumbing

One of the largest potential sources of Fort Mill and Rock Hill water damage in your home is the plumbing attached to your sinks and fixtures. Even a small leak can release gallons of water that will rot away the floors and structure of your house over several months. You need to thoroughly inspect your plumbing on a regular basis. This does not take long. Look at the pipes under your sinks, faucets and around your showers. Look behind your toilets. You want to look for any unexplained moisture, rusted connections or signs of damage on the floor and walls. If you do find a problem, then call a licensed plumber immediately to repair the pipes.

Maintain Your Water Heater

Your water heater can do damage to your house if it is not maintained. Your water heater is not intended to last forever. As it starts to wear down over the years, it will become more of a threat. The seals and structure of your water heater will begin to fail. This can allow water to constantly leak out and onto the floor beneath. The result could be foundation damage if the water heater is in the basement or damage to the floor in other parts of the home. You want to maintain your water heater, have it inspected every year or two and replace it every ten to fifteen years.

Know the Location of Your Main Shutoff Valves

A final step is to know the location of the main shutoff valves in your home. These are the valves responsible for allowing water to enter your home from a municipal supply or well. Memorize the location so that you can quickly cut off the water to your house if a major leak occurs. This can stop water damage from getting worse. Take a close look at the valves and make certain you understand how to use them.
