The SERVPRO Biohazard Cleanup Process
At SERVPRO Team Cox, we have a thorough and methodical approach to handling biohazard cleanup. Our step-by-step process ensures safety, compliance, and complete restoration.
- Initial Assessment and Risk Analysis
Our team starts with a detailed assessment of the site. We identify the type and extent of contamination, determine the scope of work required, and establish safety protocols. Each biohazard situation is unique, so we take time to evaluate all risks before starting the cleanup process.
- Containment of the Affected Area
Once the assessment is complete, we move to contain the affected area. This prevents the spread of contaminants to other parts of the property. Containment methods may include physical barriers, sealing off rooms, or using advanced air filtration systems to control airborne particles.
- Removal of Biohazardous Materials
The next step is the careful removal of hazardous materials. Our technicians are equipped with proper protective gear and specialized equipment to safely handle and dispose of biohazardous waste. All materials are bagged and transported according to regulatory standards, ensuring full compliance with disposal regulations.
- Deep Cleaning and Disinfection
After removing the biohazardous materials, we thoroughly clean and disinfect the affected area. We use hospital-grade disinfectants that kill harmful pathogens and microorganisms. Odor control and air purification measures are also implemented to ensure that the area is not only clean but also free of any unpleasant smells or airborne contaminants.
- Final Inspection and Restoration
Once cleaning and disinfection are complete, we conduct a final inspection to ensure that the area is safe for re-entry. In some cases, biohazard situations can cause damage to structural elements like flooring, drywall, or carpets. If necessary, we also offer reconstruction services to repair any damage, returning your property to its pre-incident condition.

Benefits of a Professional Cleaning Service - For Helping Stop the Spread of COVID-19
4/28/2020 (Permalink)
Protect Yourself and your Employees From Covid-19
As we live through unprecedented times, SERVPRO of Rock Hill & York County is doing what we can to help mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus. Workplaces are areas that are highly susceptible to spreading the disease due to the amount of time we spend at our workplaces, the flow of visitors coming in and out, and the large amount of available surface area. By cleaning and disinfecting these spaces, you have the peace of mind that your facility has been sanitized to protect against diseases like COVID-19. Many businesses are taking proactive measures to clean and disinfect their facilities using resources available to them, this is a great initiative for stopping the spread of the disease. Everyone has the ability to get a cleaning agent and scrub high touch areas such as keyboards, doorknobs, and tables, but here are some reasons why it may be worth considering using a professional cleaning service to do this for you.
High grade products.
A professional cleaning company will use high grade disinfectants usually not available to average consumers. While there are a number of household disinfectants available for use today, there are benefits to using a high-grade disinfectant. COVID-19 is a brand-new virus and therefore, no disinfectants have had scientific testing on their effectiveness against COVID-19. This means that while many household brands may work against COVID-19, there is no guarantee. However, using a high-grade disinfectant puts you in the best position to be ensured of complete disinfection.
Trained Technicians
Having professional technicians clean your business provides many benefits that you would not normally have with your regular janitorial staff, other employees, or yourself.
- Trained technicians know where the high touch areas are. Having technicians go over every detailed area of your business will ensure complete coverage where others may miss. Technicians are able to get every nook and cranny that could have been exposed to harmful pathogens and sanitize those spots using high-grade products.
- Technicians know how to use proper PPE. By using PPE (personal protective equipment) technicians keep themselves safe from any potential exposure. This minimizes risk that your regular janitorial staff or other employees would have to infection while trying to sanitize the area. Trained technicians know proper procedures for how to put on, operate in, and take off the masks, gloves, and protective suits, in order to prevent exposure. According to CDC guidelines, workers should never be sent in to clean areas where there was a confirmed COVID-19 case without using PPE.
- At SERVPRO of Rock Hill & York County we have proper insurance policies for protecting our staff against COVID-19 exposure. As stated above, our technicians have been trained to use all proper PPE to prevent exposure, however on the chance that they are exposed, we have insurance to cover the costs that would come from that event. By sending someone into clean a COVID-19 exposed area, you risk the chance of legal liability as well as the health of your workers, your customers and yourself. You have a lot on your mind right now and the last thing you need to worry about is risking exposure while trying to disinfect an area.
Peace of Mind
Customers and employees are the backbone of every business. You want to protect them and ensure they are not at risk while at your facilities. Having a professional service ensure you have been thoroughly disinfected is one of the things you can control for stopping the spread of this disease. Being able to tell your employees and customers that they are entering a space that has been completely sanitized from top to bottom is a relieving feeling and one which SERVPRO of Rock Hill & York County would love to provide.
Now is the perfect time to invest in a professional cleaning. With the continued government shutdown, your building is empty, or for essential businesses, very low traffic. Having a SERVPRO of Rock Hill & York County team come in now will avoid the usual disruption of a top to bottom cleaning and will allow your employees and customers to come back to work in a fresh and sanitary environment. Being proactive during these stressful times is a way to ease your mind and everyone else who enters your facilities. Call SERVPRO of Rock Hill & York County at (803) 324-5780 24/7.
The Biohazard Solution For The Fort Mill And Rock Hill Areas
3/10/2020 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Rock Hill & York County for any of your Biohazard needs.
Dealing with a crime or trauma In the Rock Hill or Fort Mill area is undoubtedly difficult. Unfortunately, biohazards can linger at the scenes of these events, creating the potential for new victims if they are not properly eliminated. You can protect yourself from the physical aftermath of a traumatic situation by calling SERVPRO of Rock Hill & York County for any biohazard cleanup.
The Purpose
Blood-borne pathogens, various biohazards, crime scene residues and dangerous chemicals often remain even after the initial crime or trauma. SERVPRO's professional restoration experts trained in biohazard cleanup have specialized training and equipment that allows us to safely remove any toxic materials and restore normalcy to the area. Their expertise is invaluable for people struggling to deal with the repercussions of a variety of unpleasant experiences, including:
- Crimes and accidents
- Suicides, homicides, injuries, and death
- Sewage backups
- Methamphetamine labs
- Chemical spills
- Hoarding
- Vandalism
- Animal waste or remains
The Process
When cleansing a scene, professionals create three distinct zones with biohazard tape and plastic sheeting. The clean area provides a place for them to store their equipment, reducing the risk of cross-contamination. The buffer zone offers a secure area for them to put on their personal protective equipment. The actual scene that needs to be cleaned is referred to as the control zone.
Once the sections have been established, restoration professionals get to work, eliminating biohazards using a three-step process. In the cleaning phase, they remove blood, biological materials, dirt, and chemical residues. They also take out any materials that cannot be salvaged, disposing of them as medical waste. The sanitization phase comes next. Here, technicians spray a sanitizing foam over any affected surfaces. This foaming is repeatedly done until adenosine triphosphate fluorescence testing verifies that the area has been thoroughly sanitized. In the final phase, technicians use deodorizing agents to remove any odors.
At SERVPRO we understand the emotional and practical challenges involved in dealing with a crime scene or trauma scene. Our professional technicians have the empathy and expertise needed to tackle biohazard cleanup and restoration situations in the Rock Hill and Fort Mill area. Following the protocols established by both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), we can remove the risks inherent in these scenes and restore a safe environment in your home or business. Call 803-324-5780 today to discover more about our services or request professional assistance.

Category Three Water: What Is It and Who Should Clean It?
9/19/2018 (Permalink)
We are ready to help with your water disaster.
Water Cleanup Service For Clover
Clover South Carolina is prone to flooding during the rainy season. As business owners, this presents a growing concern for not only safety and profitability but the integrity of your property. Thankfully, most insurance companies cover burst pipes and toilet overflow; however, if your business is ever struck by flood water, you may be left with a few questions about water categories, especially category three.
1. What Is Category Three Water Damage?
Category three water damage is typical in large-scale flooding. This natural disaster tends to overflow rivers and overburden sewage systems leading to a dangerous mixture call the black water. At this category level, water is capable of supporting bacterial growth and becomes hazardous for humans and pets to consume or come into contact.
2. Can You Clean Category Three Water Damage Yourself?
No, unless you are a professional, you should not attempt to clean black water yourself. This type of flood water can cause illness and disease and possibly death if touched or ingested. It is not uncommon for this type of water to carry hepatitis pathogens, and you do not need to swallow this water to become ill or a carrier.
3. Who Cleans This Type of Water Damage?
As category three water is dangerous, it is wise to seek the assistance of professionals who hold the appropriate certifications and training to handle and dispose of this type of water. You can check with your local Clover municipalities or York Emergency Management to find restoration specialists capable of this type of work.
Since flooding is a concern for most business owners in this area, and category three flood water presents potential risk from exposure, it is wise to seek assistance from your insurance provider and local government to ensure that you as well as your business remain safe. Do not let the concern over expense come above the concern for your health.

3 Reasons Your Sewer May Back Up After a Storm In Fort Mill
8/30/2018 (Permalink)
Sewage backup in Fort Mill South Carolina.
Fort Mill Sewage Backup Cleanup Company
You may not associate heavy waters with a sewer backup. Usually this type of problem is caused by bad plumbing or blockages in your sewer lines. However, when your Fort Mill,SC, commercial building is filled with sewage after a big storm, you may start to wonder what caused this issue.
1. Overwhelmed Sewer Systems: When lots of water enters the ground all over the city, the city sewer system may become overloaded with water. When this reservoir is full, the liquid has to flow someplace else. This can mean the rain water pushes the sewage back up into your building. Installing a backflow preventer can help you avoid this unsanitary problem.
2. Storm-Caused Damage: Storms can cause trees to fall down and other major damage. While this destruction doesn't seem to have anything to do with your sewer backup, it could in fact be the cause. If a downed tree were to break a sewer line, it could cause the dirty water to seep back into your building. Line breaks are a major cause of sewage loss. Having your system inspected regularly can help you spot and fix weakened areas before they become a problem.
3. Rain-Induced Clogs: Black water can carry foreign objects into your sewer line. Heavy rain, for example, could pick up rocks, twigs and lawn ornaments. As the water flows to the nearest drain, the items it carries end up getting stuck in sewer drains and lines. These clogs cause the sewage to start to flow backwards back into your building. It can be hard to prevent this type of issue.
No matter what causes a sewer backup, it is never a fun problem to have. The unsanitary conditions of the water require you to call in a commercial restoration specialist who has dealt with sewage problems in the past. Without help from an expert, you may be unable to completely resolve the problem. If you live in the Town of Fort Mill or the surrounding area and need emergency restoration service we can help. Call us today at 803-324-5780.
For local news on sewage backup in Fort Mill you can find many articles around the web.
Sewage Backup and Prevention Tips
8/17/2018 (Permalink)
Backed up sewers can wreak havoc on a home, causing thousands of dollars in damage to floors, walls, furniture and electrical systems.
Causes of Sewer Backup
Aging Sewer Systems: The Civil Engineering Research Foundation reports that the number of backed up sewers is increasing at an alarming rate of about 3 percent annually. In addition, a recent report from the American Society of Civil Engineers indicates that the nation's 500,000-plus miles of sewer lines are on average over thirty years old. The increase in the number of homes connected to already aging sewage systems has also contributed to rapid increases in sanitary sewer backups, flooded basements and overflows.
Combined Pipelines: Problems also arise in systems that combine storm water and raw sewage into the same pipeline. During many rain storms, the systems are exposed to more volume than they can handle, and the result is a sewage backup situation that allows sewage to spew out into basements and other low lying drains.
Blockages Due to Tree Roots: Shrubs and trees seeking moisture will make their way into sewer line cracks. These roots can cause extensive damage. They may start out small, getting into a small crack in the pipe; but as the tree or shrub continues to grow, so does the root. Tree roots can enter the service pipe at joints and cause blockages. Tree roots can travel a long way, and roots from different types of trees act differently. If city trees are suspected, your plumber can contact the city, and samples of the roots will be used to help identify the trees and who is responsible for cleanup. Sometimes the blockage is a result of a combination of city and private trees. In this case costs are split between the city and the property owner.
Sanitary Main: A blockage can occur in a city sanitary main. If the blockage is not detected in time, sewage from the main can back up into homes and businesses through floor drains. Usually this happens slowly, giving the owner time to call a licensed plumber to assess the damage. If water is entering into your basement at a rapid rate, call the city public works office and report the problem immediately.
Water in Basement: Most basement flooding is not related to the sanitary sewer system. In many cases, soil settles adjacent to the building and, if not corrected, leads to rainwater flowing towards the building and down the outside of the foundation wall. This is particularly true in older buildings, where cracks may have developed in the foundation or floor slab that allow water to enter the basement. The cement floor and basement walls of these structures may have deteriorated to the point that they are no longer waterproof. In these cases, water can show up in a basement that has never had a water problem. This will usually happen after a number of rain storms, when the ground is saturated. Drainage can be improved by making sure that water drains away from the building. Owners may also be able to prevent flooding by water sealing the basement.
Most homeowners may not realize that they are responsible for the maintenance and repair of their house or sewer lateral—the pipeline between the city sanitary sewer main, usually located in the street—and the building. The sewer lateral is owned and maintained by the property owner including any part that extends into the street or public right of way. A cracked or deteriorated lateral or one filled with tree roots can allow groundwater to seep into the system, contributing to the problem.
How to Prevent Backups In Your Lateral and in the City Main
Dispose of Grease Properly: Cooking oil should be poured into a heat-resistant container and disposed of properly, after it cools off, not in the drain. Washing grease down the drain with hot water is unsatisfactory. As the grease cools off, it will solidify either in the drain, the property owner's line, or in the main sewer causing the line to constrict and eventually clog.
Dispose of Paper Products Properly: Paper towels, disposable (and cloth) diapers and feminine products can cause a great deal of trouble in the property owner's lateral as well as in the city main. These products do not deteriorate quickly, as bathroom tissue does, so do not put them down the drain or toilet.
Replace Your Line with New Plastic Pipe: One way to prevent tree roots from entering your line is to replace your line and tap with new plastic pipe. If you have continuing problems with tree roots in your lateral, you may have to have the roots cut periodically.
Correct Illegal Plumbing Connections: Do not connect French drains, sump pumps and other flood control systems to your sanitary sewer. It is illegal, and debris and silt will clog your line. Consult a plumber to correct any pre-existing illegal connections. French drains are common drainage systems, primarily used to prevent ground and surface water from penetrating or damaging building foundations.
Install a Backwater Prevention Valve: A backwater valve is a fixture installed into a sewer line, and sometimes into a drain line, in the basement of your home or business to prevent sewer backflows. A properly installed and maintained backwater valve allows sewage to go out, but not to come back in. Property owners are responsible for the installation and maintenance of backwater valves. The cost to install one depends on the type of plumbing in the building and the difficulty of installation. Check with a qualified plumber.
What to Do If You Experience a Sewer Backup
A sewer backup can lead to disease, destruction of your valuables, damage to your house or business, and can even result in electrical malfunctions. Prompt cleanup of affected property can help minimize the inconvenience and prevent mold or further damage. If you experience a sewer backup situation, immediately arrange for the cleanup of your property. This should include:
- Wet-vacuuming or removal of spillage
- Mopping floors and wiping walls with soap and disinfectant
- Flushing out and disinfecting plumbing fixtures
- Steam cleaning or removing wet carpets or drapes
- Repairing or removing damaged wallboard or wall covering
- Cleanup of ductwork

Our technicians have the training, the experience, the products, and the equipment to help you and your family recover from the tragedy.
Physical damage to surfaces traces to causes as varied as gunshots, vandalism, crime-fighter efforts to subdue a suspect, and many more scenarios. Dusting for fingerprinting and other evidence collecting techniques leave residues and staining. SERVPRO employees train for these and other issues and know how to match strategies, cleaning products, deodorization methods, and tools to the damage done.
Particular care is crucial to avoid exposure to and the spread of blood and other fluid-borne pathogens. The SERVPRO crew on site is familiar with proper personal protective equipment protocols, cleaning up and disposing of hazardous human waste according to local health codes. Thorough cleaning and effective treatment with EPA registered disinfectants follow to ensure the future safety of your home’s inhabitants.
SERVPRO also evaluates the need to clear away and replace damaged building materials if deemed unrestorable. Should a crime in your home turn your life upside down, SERVPRO of Rock Hill & York County is ready to assist with great skill and compassion. Call (803) 324-5780 to arrange for a speedy inspection and development of a restoration plan for this challenging circumstance.
Understanding Black Water
7/23/2018 (Permalink)
Black water or sewage cleanup service is only a call away at 803-324-5780.
When you have water damage or flooding in your home in Fort Mill,SC it's important to know what type of water you are dealing with to ensure proper and safe restoration. The insurance and restoration industries separate flood water into three categories:
• Category 3: "Black water" is the most dangerous of the categories and must be treated carefully by a knowledgeable expert. This water comes from local flooding, such as from rivers or hurricanes, and also plumbing floods that include sewage. It is contaminated with pathogens including bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Other chemical contaminates may also be in the water.
• Category 2:"Gray water" may have some pathogens and can still cause some health danger. A gray water flood is usually sourced from plumbing breaks with soiled water, like a clothes washer or toilet overflow without feces. Gray water can become a black water problem if exposed to the right temperatures and time.
• Category 1: "Clean water" usually comes from a clean pipe break, like a supply pipe or kitchen sink. This water damage is not harmful to humans unless it is not cleaned right away. Over time, this water would become more dangerous and be reclassified as gray or worse.
Black Water Cleaning
Black water cleaning must be meticulous. Immediate response is critical to prevent the development of mold. Once mold does develop, additional remediation efforts are needed to prevent further contamination and spread of mold in your home. Mold reproduces in just 48 hours and colonies in your water damaged home can quickly get out of control.
Cleanup of this type of water damage should also be done carefully. Protective gear is critical to protect skin, eyes and lungs from exposure. Strong knowledge on what to tear out and remove immediately is important to prevent further contamination and allow for proper drying of the remaining structure. Antimicrobials and disinfectant will be needed to remaining materials. Professional remediation specialists are beneficial in managing category 3 flood remediation due to the nature of the hazard and the importance of timely and effective removal. Knowing how to remove this water safely and properly is important. You might also consider putting preventative measures in place to reduce the risk of this situation in the future.
Taking Preventative Measures
If you have experienced a sewer backup once, you know it is definitely something that you do not want to happen again. There are a few ways to reduce your risk:
• Install backwater valves on any basement plumbing fixtures
• On the house trap, ensure that all sewer trap plugs fit properly and tightly
Removing Sewage Backup
First and foremost, you want to shut off the electricity and gas in the space that was affected by the backup. Then, the most important part is to get all of the standing water out as quickly as possible. A sump or trash pump might be beneficial for this step in the process. Once removed, start by opening windows and doors and running fans to air out the space.
Any items touched by the backup or black water should be thrown away due to the risk of them being contaminated. Then, start cleaning. Use appropriate cleaning solutions, such as bleach and other disinfectants. Go over all surfaces multiple times, using clean sponges or cloths so that you can avoid cross-contaminating cleaned areas. Once clean, make sure to use another fresh towel to thoroughly dry the area. As you are doing this, be careful not to track sewage or other debris to already-cleaned areas.
It is important that sewer backup is promptly removed to avoid additional problems. Once it is gone and restoration is completed, consider instituting preventative measures to help to decrease the chances of your home experiencing this issue in the future.

The Risks of Forgoing a Biohazard Clean Up Crew
2/28/2018 (Permalink)
Biohazard crews are extremely important for restoration work!
Need A Biohazard Cleanup Company?
Biohazard cleanup crews are extensively trained to handle the decontamination process of your Rock Hill home or business in the aftermath of many biohazard situations. Common scenarios that warrant a professional restoration include sewage backups, chemical spills, blood pathogens and methamphetamine labs.
When your property has been exposed to biological and chemical contaminants, your health is at risk. These situations all leave harmful residues behind, including bodily fluids, such as blood, medical waste, and microorganisms that can harbor viruses and toxins. When not handled quickly, these biohazard materials can rapidly spread infection and disease.
These situations should be considered emergencies that are best left to a biohazard cleanup crew. Biohazard materials can be dangerous if handled without proper training, equipment, and protection. Emergency biohazard cleaning services know how to remove these materials effectively while containing the potential spread of sickness.
If you are dealing with a crime scene, this is another reason to leave the job to a biohazard cleanup crew. These professionals are trained to cooperate with law enforcement in the aftermath of a crime. If you attempt to handle the process yourself, you pose the risk of hindering an investigation through cross-contamination or otherwise meddling with evidence.
These professionals also ensure that your Fort Mill property is thoroughly sanitized, even when everything looks clean. Proper sterilization will make your home or business safe again, and biohazard cleanup crews have access to commercial-grade equipment and disinfectants that you wouldn’t. Our emergency service covers Clover, York, Tega Cay, Fort Mill, Rock Hill, River Hills, Lake Wylie and all of York County.

Crime Scenes and the Importance of Professional Cleaning In Fort Mill And Rock Hill

Top rated crime scene cleanup company in Fort Mill and Rock Hill.
Crime Scene Cleaning Company In Fort Mill And Rock Hill
Cleaning up a crime scene is grisly work, but it needs to be done. It should be done by professionals no matter what. You may be wondering why that is, so we’re here to explain. There are actually several reasons why you should always call in a professional to clean scenes of murder, drug-related damages, or any other major crime. Are you ready to learn more? Well, let’s get started!
Crime Scenes carry sensitive information.
Once the police force has thoroughly investigated the crime scene, the area may be covered in residues specific to a crime scene. Tear gas residue, fingerprint gathering dust, and other police specific things may remain once the investigation is over. Cleaning them is not always as simple as a little scrub either. Cleaning up a fire extinguisher’s remains is also no picnic. These things are better left to the professionals.
Crime Scenes can be dangerous.
A crime that resulted in major injury or death can often leave behind hazardous waste that can pose a danger to you. Blood can carry many pathogens and should never be handled by anyone who doesn’t know what they are doing. Not to mention the fact that blood stains are difficult to clean. There are also special protocols for the removal of many crime scene elements including blood and harmful chemicals. We can also handle any leftover meth lab issues. These are particularly dangerous scenes, so please let us handle it. It’s for your safety.
Crime Scenes can be emotional.
Whether or not someone you know was involved in the crime scene doesn’t necessarily indicate whether or not it will have an emotional impact. These circumstances tend to be difficult for all people involved. So, when it comes time to clean the area, you may be better off allowing a third party to come in and take away some of your burden.

Sewage Backup Cleanup For Fort Mill
8/10/2016 (Permalink)
Sewage cleanup in Fort Mill can get messy.
Need help with Fort Mill sewage cleanup?
Sewage is one of the most dangerous substances to enter homes or buildings. It contains fungi, bacteria and viruses, many of which are disease-causing. Unfortunately, many people fail to understand the hazards that Fort Mill sewage presents, particularly for the very young or very old, or for those with compromised immune systems or respiratory problems.
Here are the key principles homeowners should know about sewage back-ups:
Sewage contains a variety of pathogenic – disease causing – fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites. Anyone who works on sewage losses must have updated vaccinations, including one for Hepatitis B.
Sewage exposure is particularly dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, including anyone under two or over 60, those who are pregnant, ill, recovering from surgery, on prescription drugs or chemotherapy, or are AIDS victims.
It is not safe to stay in a building that’s flooded with sewage unless the contaminated area can be completely sealed off and placed under controlled air flow so that there will be no cross contamination of unaffected areas.
Highly absorbent sewage-saturated materials, such as carpet, pad, upholstery, bedding, wicker, paper or even fabrics that can’t be washed in hot water (130°F/54°C) for at least 10 minutes, must be contained and disposed of properly. This goes for sewage-saturated drywall, insulation and several other structural materials too. There’s simply too great a health risk involved if any of these materials are dried in place and cleaned only.
Only the most highly trained professionals should attempt sewage remediation work.

What to do When there is Sewage in your Fort Mill Basement
8/2/2016 (Permalink)
Best sewage cleanup company in Fort Mill.
What to do when there is sewage in your basement
A sewer backing up, or contaminated water backing out of your tub, sink or toilet can be an absolute nightmare for Fort Mill homeowners. The truth is you can’t (and shouldn’t) do very much; sewage contaminated water is dangerous to your health and should be avoided at all costs. If you have water backing up out of toilet, sink or bathtub in your Fort Mill home, then follow these steps and call SERVPRO of Rock Hill & York County.
Your Game Plan
-Stay out of the area/avoid cross contamination
-Determine the source
-Arrange repair and cleanup services
-Call your Insurance Company
Keep Children and Pets away from sewer-water affected areas
Keep children and pets away the moment the sewer water is discovered, until the clean-up crew and sanitation is complete. Sewage is considered Category 3 water, more commonly known as black water. Category 3 water or Black water is defined by the IICRC as “the worst classification and is grossly unsanitary. It could cause severe illness or death if ingested. It used to be called black water, and sources include sewer backup, flooding from rivers or streams, toilet overflow with feces, and stagnant liquid that has begun to support bacterial growth.” Keep children and pets away at all times and if you yourself must go in the area, wash your hands thoroughly and avoid touching cuts, eyes, mouth or ears with your hands or any item that came in contact with the black water.
Risks of Sewage back up debris
Category 3 water/Raw sewage contains Diseases such as Hepatitis, Salmonella, E.Coli and Parasites just to name a few, would you risk cleaning this yourself without proper training or the tools and chemicals to do it correctly? These disease survive weeks even months if not properly killed. Doing it yourself, or hiring the wrong professional puts you, your family, pets and house guests at a great risk. Call SERVPRO to schedule emergency service to have the job taken care of like it never even happened.
Determine whether the waste is local (as in, from your own home) or from the sewer system also known as “backflow”
Determine the source of the sewage backup – if entering the area seems like it would be dangerous to your health (no proper protective equipment) then just skip on down to arrange services. IF you are able to do some inspecting, then determine the source by the amount and the flow rate. A Local waste product would be from a blockage, tree roots affecting plumbing lines or broken or collapsed lines on your property, this waste would be from your own home but is still considered a category 3. Backflow is when the sewer system in your neighborhood or municipality is overwhelmed, and it reverses in your pipes, causing it to erupt from toilets, sinks and tubs. This waste product is waste from all your neighbors and nearby buildings pouring into your home. This can happen from heavy rainflow overwhelming your municipality’s sewer system, causing it to backflow into your home. Regardless of the way it came in, the sewage needs to be immediately removed and sanitation needs to begin as soon as possible to reduce cost of clean up and more importantly minimize health risks.
Arrange Services with SERVPRO
Call an Emergency Restoration company such as SERVPRO as we are IICRC Certified and specialize in cleaning up hazardous waste. Most contractors and plumbers do not have the capability to clean up the site after the repairs have been made, or at the very least inadequate equipment – and maynot be approved by your insurance company if you choose to claim the loss.
SERVPRO also has a 1-4-8 policy, which means within 1 hour from notice of loss (When you call), a SERVPRO professional will contact you to arrange services. Within 4 hours of notice of loss, a SERVPRO professional will be onside to start mitigating services. Within 8 business hours, a verbal briefing of the scope will be communicated to your adjuster by a SERVPRO Professional. If any SERVPRO believes they are incapable of responding within this time frame, they will refer you to a SERVPRO who can so you are not left waiting!
Call your insurance company
Ask your agent if this is a covered loss, and what your deductible will be. This can be done before or after calling SERVPRO as we accept all insurance plans and you can also pay yourself – whether you are covered or not, this will not affect your ability to receive service.
What to do while the Crew is at work
Once the services have been arranged, and the SERVPRO crew is at work, do your best to keep all equipment running, still keep children out of the area as well as pets and do not be afraid to ask questions. While your plumber is there ask if there are ways to prevent a Sewage back up or back flow from happening again and ask him about installing a Backflow valve.

- Crimes and accidents
- Suicides, homicides, injuries, and death
- Sewage backups
- Methamphetamine labs
- Chemical spills
- Hoarding
- Vandalism
- Animal waste or remains
The Process
When cleansing a scene, professionals create three distinct zones with biohazard tape and plastic sheeting. The clean area provides a place for them to store their equipment, reducing the risk of cross-contamination. The buffer zone offers a secure area for them to don their personal protective equipment.
At SERVPRO we understand the emoitional and practical challenges involved in dealing with a crime scene or trauma scene. Our professional technicians have the empathy and expertise needed to tackle biohazard cleanup and restoration situations in the Rock Hill, Fort Mill area. There are those situations where clutter becomes extreme to the point where it becomes a safety and health concern. Again every situation is different and what the local government thinks is extreme maybe different from what you think. The bottom line is that whether the local government or you think that the clutter is an extreme situation can lead to an unhealthy situation including bio hazard situations.
The term biohazard seems to have a strong context, but it does describe what can happen when extreme cluttering gets out of control. Let’s talk about some of the bio hazards that may be created when major clutter situations occur.
Biohazard Food Concerns
When you first read the word food, you may have thought you read it wrong. But food is a leading cause of biohazard situations with extreme clutter. Those who have major clutter issues, eventually lose the use of the kitchen and the kitchen appliances. They take the food and eat it in every other room in the house. Instead of throwing the food away they leave the left overs where they ate. One of the theories explained, is the concept that those who clutter have a short span of attention. Something takes them away from putting the food back in the correct place.
The next problem is that the food rots and creates mold issues and draws in mice and rats. The mice and rats leave tons of urine and feces. The feces itself has a deadly disease called Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. This disease is deadly according to the CDC and can actually be contracted by breathing it in.
Safety
Every fire department has complained about extreme cluttered homes. Cluttering can be so bad, that if there is a fire it becomes almost impossible to pull someone out alive. The clutter itself becomes a fire fuel that when lit is impossible to stop. The other issues are the actual clutter following on top of someone and burying them alive. Cases upon cases are documented of people being found days and months later buried in piles of clutter.
Human Feces and Human Urine
A major reason why people clutter extremely is the emotional attachment to what they are cluttering. To part with what they have collected is almost impossible and they will hold on to these items forever without help.
One thing that clutter victims collect is there own urine and feces. Urine is collected in all kinds of bottles and feces stored in plastic bags. These items are stored all around the clutter and underneath piles of stuff.
Clutter clean up with bio hazard
Many families and friends and even professional organizers feel the need to assist in extreme Clover hoarding situations. As they begin the task of removing, organizing and sorting the items they start to smell bad odors. The bad odors they discover come from mold and rotten food and of course rat and mice feces. At this point most friends and family members of clutters hire someone who has certifications and experience.

Rely on SERVPRO for Safe Biohazard Removal from Your Rock Hill Property
Blood, bodily fluids, and other Rock Hill biohazards can endanger anyone who comes in contact with them. Even trace amounts so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye can pose serious health risks. When a site in your home or business has been contaminated, how do you make it safe again? Rely on the professionals at SERVPRO of Rock Hill & York County in South Carolina for top-notch biohazard cleanup and restoration services.
Avoiding Health Risks
Is it necessary to seek professional assistance in cleaning up a location impacted by crime, trauma or death? With the risks posed by blood-borne pathogens and dangerous communicable diseases, cleaning a scene contaminated with biohazards like blood is a perilous undertaking for anyone who lacks the proper training and equipment. It is unpleasant to think about, but blood and bodily fluids are prone to splattering so that minute amounts can affect a wide area. The air at these scenes can be hazardous since small particles can become airborne if dried material is disturbed. Anything removed from the scene must also be disposed of properly to avoid spreading the contamination. Besides, you cannot assume the area is safe again just because the visible traces have been removed. If a space contaminated with blood or other biohazards is not appropriately cleaned, sanitized and restored, these unseen hazards can linger, posing a threat to anyone who enters it. Ultimately, the best way to make sure that a place is once again safe is to use a professional organization like SERVPRO that is experienced in biohazard restoration.
Preventing Legal Repercussions
As if the health risks created by biohazards are not dire enough, failure to have a contaminated space properly cleaned can also have serious legal consequences. The responsibility for cleaning up after a crime, trauma or death falls on the Rock Hill property owner, and there are regulations and laws regarding how biohazards are handled that must be followed. These rules are designed to safeguard everyone, and ignorance is not considered an acceptable excuse for disregarding them. Individuals and businesses that do not follow these rules may find themselves facing hefty fines. They might even be held liable if someone else is injured by their actions. Using a professional team that understands what is required to comply with the various rules and regulations governing biohazards in your area can shield you from both health risks and legal issues.

Why Sewage Backups are More Than Just a Plumbing Problem
1/13/2016 (Permalink)
Have a sewage backup in Fort Mill or Rock Hill? Call us today for help.
Sewer backups bring more than just bad smell and a huge mess. It also exposes the people around to a number of potential health risks because of what it brings with it. Sewage backup is a mix of solid waste; debris, human excrement, and a number of other things that you would not want to come in close contact with. Knowing everything that comes with it, you cannot even begin to imagine the kind of microorganisms swarming all over it.
With these microorganisms found in sewage backup also come a number of different diseases. You can get these diseases through mere skin contact or inhalation, as well as accidental transfer from hand to mouth. Some health risks include kidney failure, blood damage, skin infection, hepatitis, Weil’s disease, and occupational asthma. It is important to prioritize sewage backup prevention and eliminate the aggravation a sewage backup will cause.

Blood cleanup and removal in Rock Hill
5 Myths about Cleaning Blood Spills
When it comes to cleaning blood spills in Rock Hill, there is pressure to get it right the first time. Why? Because blood can harbor serious health risks, and bloodborne pathogens can seep into surfaces and cause potential illnesses, bacterial growth, and foul odors. It can be difficult to effectively clean a blood spill, however, if you do not have the correct information or tools to do so. Below are 5 common myths about cleaning blood spills.
- The best way to thoroughly clean a blood spill is with bleach. Bleach has long been thought of as the ultimate sanitizer. Unfortunately, according to Educating Wellness, "Chlorine bleach is a strong corrosive material. It will irritate the eyes, skin, and the respiratory tract by merely inhaling the gasses. The dangers of bleach are even greater when mixing it with other cleaners." Not only is it dangerous to your health, but bleach also has the ability to destroy carpet, furnishings, and other surfaces, and can disturb ecological balance if overused.
- Cleaning up a blood spill and sanitizing a blood spill are the same thing. Although these words are often used interchangeably, they mean very different things. Cleaning is simply the process of removing material from a surface, whereas sanitizing is completely ridding a surface of microorganisms and biological material. Remember: Although a surface may look clean, biological material may still be present.
- It is impossible to fully sanitize a surface without using bleach. Believe it or not, there are better ways to sanitize blood spills than by using bleach. Furthermore, many of these processes are not toxic to humans, animals, or the environment.
- If you are cleaning the blood of a family member, you do not have to take the same precautions as you would if you were cleaning up the blood of a stranger. No matter whose blood has been spilled, you should wear protective equipment like gloves and goggles. Because 1 in 24 people are carrying HIV, Hepatitis B and C, or a host of other pathogens (and are often unaware that they have been infected), all blood should be handled as if it poses a serious health risk.
- You are on your own. In the case of a homicide, suicide, or serious accident that happens at home, it is generally the responsibility of the family to clean up the scene afterwards. For many families, this seems like an impossible and trying task. Fortunately, no family has to go through this process alone.

The damage can be costly, as the contaminated water or sewage usually destroys everything it comes into contact with. For the thousands of dollars in damage, it would be well worth purchasing the additional insurance coverage. Typical cost for such a policy addition is $25 to $50 annually. Costs for an average sewage loss range from $1,000 to $10,000 or more.

Another type of serious cleanup that reaches the biohazard status is a crime or the scene of a traumatic accident. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals know how to clean, disinfect, and deodorize the facility.
