Be ready for a storm in Rock Hill

The Rock Hill area is known for its whacky weather. And while some might not believe it, Rock Hill has experienced tornado, flood, wind and hail damage in recent years. Here are some tips we recommend to keep yourself safe during a storm.

1. Build an emergency kit and a communication plan.

2. Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.

3. Postpone outdoor activities.

4. Go indoors if you hear thunder shortly after hearing lightning, remember the 30/30 rule. Go indoors if you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.

5. Secure objects that could blow away or cause damage (trash cans, toys).

6. Remember, rubber soled shoes and rubber tires provide no protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.

7. Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.

8. Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.
