It was eye opening experience to help people who have falling on hard times and are now homeless. It truly changed my view life and what true struggle is. You are the grill master of your neighborhood in York County,SC. You make the best hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers on the block. But, are you the best at grill cleaning? Many people do not consider the aftermath left on the grill after the barbeque ends. Follow the six steps below to keep your grill at peak performance all season long:

1. Turn the grill off. For a gas grill, ensure that all knobs are turned off and the propane tank is disconnected.

2. Disassemble the parts. Take the plates and grates off of the grill. Wear gloves to keep your hands clean and protect yourself from any remaining heat.

3. Soak and scrub. Soak the parts from the previous step in a mixture of dish soap and hot water. Scrub the inside walls and the underside of the grill hood. After scrubbing, use a wet paper towel to wipe the areas down. Scrub the grates and rinse with clean water.

4. Take care of the drip pan. Empty, soak and scrub the drip pan. Rinse with fresh water when clean.

5. Reassemble the grill. After the grill cleaning, return the removed parts back to the grill. This includes the drip pan, plates and grates. Reattach the propane tank on a gas grill.

6. Clean the outside. Use soapy water or stainless-steel cleaning wipes to quickly wipe down the exterior of the grill. For grills with a cabinet, wipe down the inside of that as well.

When you master the art of grill cleaning in Fort Mill or the Rock Hill area your food tastes better and your home is safer. With consistent grill maintenance, the risk of a grease fire is significantly reduced. If a fire spreads from the grill and threatens the safety of your home immediately vacate the area and call 911. A leaky Toilet Can Cause A Water Damage Claim

The prospect of replacing a leaking toilet need not strike fear into the heart of a homeowner nor necessarily require calling in a specialist in or near Fort Mill,SC to get the job done right. With a toilet tutorial, a few simple tools and a confident mindset, you can set things right.

Confirming the Need for Replacement

Determine whether toilet repair or replacement is the appropriate response to leakage. If damage to the bowl or tank is not the issue, check the shutoff valve and supply tube. A sweaty bowl can also give the appearance of a leaking toilet. Gently tighten the closet bolts that join the toilet to the floor and recheck for seepage. Rule out the relatively simple fixes.

Mastering the Steps of Installation

A methodical approach makes swapping out an old toilet for a new model a manageable task. Preview these steps and gather the necessary tools.
1. Completely close the shutoff valve.
2. Take the lid off the tank and flush the toilet, holding it down to empty the tank. Soak up any remaining water.
3. Disconnect the water supply tube.
4. Remove the caps from the closet bolts and remove the nuts.
5. Grip the bowl and move it from side to side to break the wax seal. Remove the toilet. Scrape the closet flange in the floor to remove any residue. Inspect the flange and repair or replace it if there is damage.
6. Replace the wax seal and ensure that it is perfectly centered.
7. Install a flexible supply tube in the appropriate length.
8. Apply pipe-joint compound to both ends of the supply tube fittings and tighten one end to the fill-valve shank.
9. Firmly push the toilet into place, compressing the wax seal.
10. Check placement, and then gradually tighten the closet bolts gently to avoid cracks.
11. Attach the water supply tube to the shutoff valve and then open it.

Monitor the fit not only after a few test flushes, but also for a few days afterward, tightening the nuts as needed. Successful completion of these steps will put to rest the inconvenience of a leaking toilet.

Fire Plans Can Saves Lives

Fires involving structures occur every day, including homes with pets inside. Do you know how to react when faced with a home fire? Did you know that pets tend to panic and hide when faced with a house fire? The following tips are to help you save your pets when faced with a house fire:

1. Notify rescuers that you have a pet in your home. You can purchase a sticker to place by your front door that details how many pets you have and what they are. This way, even if you are not there the pets have a chance of getting out.

2. Design a fire escape plan: It is important to know where your pets usually are.  What are their favorite places?  Where do they tend to hide when scared?  In an emergency like a fire, there will not be time to waste looking everywhere for your pets.  You must have a concrete search plan with at least 3 locations where your pets can be found.  This entails creating a layout of your home and marking your pets’ “go-to” locations. You should also survey your home to identify potential pet hiding spots and indicate them on your layout.

3. Be prepared: Keep all equipment you would need while escaping a fire close together. For dogs that would be leashes; for cats or other small animals that might be carriers.  Make sure these items are always put in the same place and are easy to get to.  Don’t bury carriers in the attic or the back of a closet.  In a fire, there won’t be any time to hunt for them. Fires are life and death situations – rapid response is critical!

4. Practice makes perfect: Once you have laid out your plan, you will need to practice it using different scenarios. For example, practice what to do if the fire is in the kitchen; then if the fire is in a bedroom, and so on.  You should go as far as to practice your escape with your pets from a second story using a ladder.  (If you don’t have an escape ladder you should get one, as well as the appropriate equipment needed to assist you carrying an animal down a ladder.)  Practice finding your pets. Start outside, rush into the house, find your pet, and take them outside. Repeating this drill can help animals become familiar with process. You may even be able to train dogs to go to a certain area outside when the smoke detector rings.  Continue practicing until you are comfortable with your fire escape plan and it works efficiently.

Fires are traumatic and life changing experiences.  Prevent further disaster by creating a Fire Escape Plan for your home. Practice it frequently and continue to test yourself.

We had such a wonderful time at the Strawberry Festival Golf Tournament! We had many great golfers stop by our SERVPRO booth. At the booth, we had a "Guess the Tees you See" competition. Strawberry Festival Golf Tournament

This is a look at our set up!

We had the honor of participating in the Strawberry Festival Golf Tournament on Tuesday, May 3rd. We met so many great people from our community, while enjoying golf. We were fortunate enough to have the 1st hole at the tournament! We handed out goodies such as golf tees, golf towels, poker chip ball markets, useful information, snacks, and waters! We enjoyed getting to know more people in our wonderful community. We held a competition to see who who could guess the closest number of tees in a jar! Winner will be announced SOON! We can't wait to do this event again next year. Though it was a little wet from the recent rain, everyone still had a great time and played well. 

It wasn't only the greens that had excess water. All over our county, we saw water damage. Remember, we are here for York County in the event of storm/water damage in your home or business. We will make it "Like it never even happened.”  

Springfield Golf Tournament In Fort Mill

Today we sponsored a golf tournament at the Springfield Country Club. It has been raining all week but it look likes the weather has cleared up this morning. The date was up in the air due to the heavy storms which caused flooding in Fort Mill and the Rock Hill area.

Thank goodness that the fairways did not suffer and damage from the floods or heavy rain.

New restaurant opens in the Springfield area of Fort Mill.

Finally the Cherry Sushi & Grill opens its doors last week. It has been doing construction on the interior for the last year as the locals have been waiting.

We visited the restaurant a day after it opened to give it a try. The sushi was good and the place was nice and inviting. We could tell that the staff was new and still trying to figure things out but everybody was pleasant.

Mr. Putty's Putt Putt And Fun Park Coming Soon

Ground breaking day in Tega Cay for a new putt putt business. It will be the first mini golf cource for the area. The Scuderi family saw that the area lacked a fun place for kids and adults to get some fresh air and have a good time.

“It’s an 18-hole championship mini golf experience,” said owner Chris Scuderi. 

The park is planning on opening in April or May of this year depending on weather. 

We all in the Fort Mill Tega Cay area will be waiting for the grand opening and look forward to adding another great attraction to the area.

Smoke Alarms Can Save Lives In Rock Hill

Fires can cause major damage to a home or business in Rock Hill.

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.*

The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detector requirements are met.

Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or clients to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.

Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance. 

• Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement.
• Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
• Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
• Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm “chirps,” the battery is low and should be replaced right away.
• Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old. 

JUST THE FACTS: Smoke Alarms

• Three out of five fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or when the alarms are not working.
• Smoke alarm failures usually result from missing, disconnected, or dead batteries.
• More than one-third (37 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present.
• The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.

The holiday season is upon us and the streets and Fort Mill houses are covered in color. As you drive around the city you can see homes strung with lights, wreathes hanging on doors and trees lit up in windows. If you decide to pick out a real tree this year, remember to keep some safety tips in mind. The National Fire Protection Association gives some tips on how to stay safe while picking out, placing, decorating and disposing your tree.

Picking out a tree  

• Pick out a tree that is fresh and not dead or dying. Look for a tree that displays fresh, green needles that don't fall off easily.

Placing the tree

• Before placing the tree in a stand, cut approximately 2” off of the base of the trunk.
• Take a look around the room and make sure to place the tree at least three feet away from any type of heat source including, but not limited to, fireplaces, candles, radiators, heaters or lamps.
• Make sure that the tree is not blocking an exit.
• Add water to the base daily to keep the tree from drying out and causing a fire hazard.

Decorating the tree

• Check the lights to make sure they’re labeled as tested and that you are using them as stated (indoor or outdoor use).
• Replace strands of lights that are worn, frayed or have loose bulb connections.
• Turn off lights before leaving the home or going to bed.

Disposing of the tree

• Get rid of the tree as soon as possible after Christmas. Having a dried out tree in the home is a fire hazard. Check with your local community to see what your options are for disposing the tree properly and safely. Do not leave the tree in the home, garage, or leaning against the house outside.

Have a safe and Happy Holiday season from all of us at SERVPRO.

As the holiday season approaches, so does the peak time of year for cooking and candle fires. Cooking equipment is the number one cause of home and workplace fires. Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and Christmas Eve are the three peak days for cooking fires. Candle fires peak on Christmas Day, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve. SERVPRO reminds you and your family to stay safe this holiday season by following these fire safety tips:

Cooking Safety Tips

· Be especially careful when frying food. Frying is the greatest fire risk.

· Be aware that electric ranges cause more fires than gas ranges.

· Never leave cooking unattended. Unattended cooking causes 90% of kitchen fires.

· Clean thoroughly to prevent grease buildup.

Candle Safety Tips

· Please candles a safe distance from flammable objects. The leading cause of candle fires is placing candles too close to something that can burn, such as curtains or furniture.

· Do not leave candles unattended.

Smoke Detector Safety Tips

· Test smoke detectors once per month. Having working smoke alarms reduces one's chance of dying by fire by about half.

· Change batteries twice per year.

· Replace smoke detectors every 10 years.

· Be sure you have smoke detectors on each level of the home and placed near or inside each bedroom at a high point in the room.

Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips

· Follow the acronym P.A.S.S. – Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze the lever, & Sweep from side to side

· The best type of fire extinguisher for home use is a multipurpose "ABC" extinguisher, which uses a dry powder that is able to put out most types of fires.

· Fire extinguishers should be placed in plain sight close to ground level in areas of the home that are more prone to fires, such as the kitchen and garage.

· Keep a fire extinguisher in each occupied bedroom to help you and your family escape if a fire occurs during the night.

· Although fire extinguishers should last for 5-15 years, check the gauge regularly to make sure the needle is in the green area and inspect the pin, hose, and handle periodically.

We at SERVPRO would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! 

Thanksgiving is a day to enjoy football, food, friends and family.  Most importantly it is a day for us to give thanks for the people and blessings that fill our lives.  While Thanksgiving traditions vary between families, the turkey is the centerpiece of each and every home during the holiday.

 With that in mind, if you decide to deep-fry your turkey, keep your family and house safe this Thanksgiving with these safe cooking tips.

Always use a turkey fryer outside, away from buildings or other flammable materials

Never use it on wooden decks or in garages

Make sure the fryer is on flat ground before using to reduce the chance of tipping

Never leave the fryer alone.  Most units lack thermostats, meaning an unwatched fryer will continue to heat until it bursts into flames

Keep children and pets away from the fryer, even after you're done cooking, since the oil can remain hot for hours 

Don't overfill the fryer

Use well-insulated potholders or oven mitts when touching pot or lid handles.  It is also recommended to wear safety goggles to avoid splatter

Only cook a completely thawed turkey and be careful with marinades.  Oil and water don't mix, water could make the oil spill over, creating a fire or explosion

If a fire does start, never use water to extinguish it.  If the fire is manageable, use an all-purpose fire extinguisher. 

If the fire grows, immediately call 9-1-1

Voters approve $226 million Fort Mill school bond package

Fort Mill school district voters approved more than $226 million in funding for local schools in a referendum Tuesday.

“We’ve had several huge decisions,” Superintendent Chuck Epps said. “Tonight’s was the most historic to this point.”

Relief, as much as celebration, filled the post-referendum gathering of school officials and supporters at the Spratt Building downtown. Runners reported results from each of the 27 precincts Tuesday night well ahead of unofficial results posting from the York County Voter Registration and Elections office.

More than 60 percent of voters approved the question. According to the elections office website, 3,258 voted in favor and 2,187 were opposed. The results remain unofficial until they are certified by the county later this week.

The Fort Mill school board called the referendum in attempt to stay ahead of a continued wave of new residents expected to swell the district’s student population by 7,000 students to 20,000 by the end of the decade.

“We felt like the whole time we were doing our duty to respond to growth in our area,” said school board Chairman Patrick White. “We feel like we put together a good plan.”

The referendum asked voters whether the district should be allowed to bond more than $226 million. Included is money for a third high school, a new middle school, an aquatics center, a training facility, land for future schools, new buses, technology upgrades and other growth-related expenses. The aquatics center will only be built if the Leroy Springs complex, where the high school swim teams practice and compete, closes and no other local facility becomes available, officials said.

The school board has a meeting set for Wednesday to look at technology upgrades and plans related to the middle school. The new middle school could have firm plans ready by November with an August 2017 opening. Earnest planning on the new high school is “a couple of years” away, Epps said.

“We’re going to hit the ground running,” he said.

Much of the opposition to the plan came from precincts with older Fort Mill and Tega Cay homes. For instance, at the Pleasant Road precinct, where 16.5 percent of eligible voters cast ballots, 156 were opposed to the bond issue and 109 were in favor.

White said the bond was a “difficult decision” because of its size, and it came down for some voters to a referendum on community growth itself. The district maintained that municipalities plan for and approve growth, and the district is bound by law to keep pace with enrollment outside its control.

White said for people wanting to send a message through the bond that they are tired of growth, perhaps they did.

“Hopefully, this vote sends a message,” he said.

Carie Deneau, a Fort Mill resident for eight years, voted no. She home-schooled her children and sent them to private school, supporting both as alternatives to a growing public system, she said. If she can spend $5,000 per year for a private education, Deneau can’t see why the public schools cost more for what she sees as poorer results.

“The amount of money that they already are spending now per pupil, I think they need to use the money that they are getting more wisely,” she said. “They’re milking people dry.”

Fort Mill school officials have repeatedly emphasized in forums and other meetings that the $7,700 it spends per pupil is well below the state average, yet the district’s performance is at or near the top every year.

Jeremy Walters, a Libertarian and twice a candidate for the S.C. House, said he voted no on Tuesday morning.

“I voted no, because I don’t want my taxes to go up,” Walters said. “And where does this money really go?”

Some voters Tuesday described frustration with their yes and no votes, saying they wished they could vote on whether to allow so many new homes rather than voting solely on the school issue. Some voters had little trouble voting in favor of the bond package.

“We’ve got so many kids in the school district that we need to take care of,” said resident Richard Hilton. “It’s education and athletics. If you’re going to keep growing you have to pay for things like this, and a bond is the best way to do it.”

Brian Murphy, one of four community members on a bond steering committee, said even with the closer-than-usual result his district didn’t disappoint.

“I grew up here,” he said. “I moved back here. I think what this referendum shows is this community values public education.”

Epps said not all takeaways from the vote were positive.

“People that have been here for a while are unhappy with the growth,” he said.

Yet, he isn’t worried about factions forming between older Fort Mill and new. At a time when Tega Cay was pacing growth in the area, there was some sense of longstanding residents versus newer ones, Epps said. With the districtwide growth now, he isn’t worried about issues dividing the community.

“We’ve long gotten past that because we’ve got growth pretty much everywhere,” Epps said.
